Most do not realize that Austin is the capital of the state of Texas. One would think that the sate, as big as it is would want a much larger town to be the capital of this bigger than life state. That’s quite a reputation to uphold, but with festivals such as Austin City Limits Music Festival as well as a lively downtown scene that encourages artistic impression. In addition to the music festivals, there are many others that are well regarded. The South by Southwest film festival is just such another. Another trait that Austinites can be proud of is the fact that they are often referred to as Silicon Hills, a play on the oft-used phrase Silicon Valley. The Technology sector in Austin is responsible for GDP of $86 billion in 2010.

The layout of Austin is something to behold. With Lake Travis being inside the city limits, the rolling hills surrounding the city afford incredible views of the cityscape and surrounding features. Being situated along the Colorado river(the Texas version) three distinct lakes are formed my dams along the river, Lady Bird Lake, Lake Travis and Lake Walter E. Long. Along the river is a sight that many cities don’t offer. At dusk, starting in March each year and ending in winter, the largest population of Mexican Free-tailed Bats heads out into the sky to search for food. Over 100,000 people view this spectacle each year.
