Learjet 55

The Learjet 55 was first proposed as three separate models; the Lear 54, Lear 55, and the Lear 56, but only the Lear 55 was ever built. In April of 1979, the first Learjet 55 took flight and production started two years later. The aircraft evolved from the Lear 55A to the Lear 55B in 1986.

The B model extended range and added a much needed multi-tube EFIS cockpit. There were only 8 B models manufactured and production evolved once again into the Lear 55C. The C model added a change to the underside of the aircraft and the addition of the Delta Fins for increased stability. The Lear 55C also improved runway performance for landing.

One of the major developments for this aircraft was the increased cabin space. With up to 50 percent more cabin space, passengers can stretch out and enjoy their flight. The cabin measures 5.7 feet high, 5.9 feet wide, and 13.7 feet long.

Instead of adding additional seating, designers at Learjet decided to leave the cabin open, to provide passengers with more comfort and amenities than previous aircraft designs.

The Learjet 55 is an excellent airplane; it affords all the qualities expected of the Learjet family, including speed and climb capabilities. With the evolution, the range was extended by almost 500 miles making it a near transcontinental mid-size aircraft. The cabin created a comfortable design for the business aircraft passenger and many models came with an enclosed Lav. The Lear 55 took the Lear Jet family from a small fast and sometimes questionably comfortable airplane to a fast, capable, and very comfortable jet.
